The former Manchester United goalkeeper bid farewell to international football after winning 129 caps.

Peter Schmeichel bowed out of international football on this day 20 years ago after making his 129th appearance for Denmark.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper had already announced his intention to retire in February that year but his final game came on April 25, aged 37, as Denmark defeated Slovenia 3-0.

At club level, Schmeichel had agreed to continue playing for Sporting Lisbon until the end of the 2001-02 season, but revealed he was leaving in May 2001 and signed a one-year deal with Aston Villa that summer.

Schmeichel was player of the tournament in Denmark's shock 1992 European Championship triumph but he was best known for his time at United, who he joined from Brondby in 1991 for £550,000.

He played a decisive role during the early period of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign, including keeping 22 clean sheets during United's 1995-96 double-winning season.

Schmeichel ended up winning 15 trophies for United, with his final game for the club being their historic Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in 1999 which completed an unprecedented treble.

After leaving United, Schmeichel went on to play for four more years with Sporting, Villa and Manchester City.
