Roy Hodgson: Wilshere goal "not just any old goal!"

England manager Roy Hodgson believes that Jack Wilshere controlled the midfield in their match against Slovenia.

England manager Roy Hodgson was proud of Jack Wilshere after his performance against Slovenia, but also understands that it was unlucky Nathaniel Clyne did not play.

Wilshere scored two impressive goals to add to Wayne Rooney's late winner, after Slovenia had taken the lead through Milivoje Novakovic then equalised thanks to Nejc Pecnik.

"[It was] not just any old goal from Jack Wilshere, they weren't exactly tap-ins!" Hodgson told BBC Sport. "Both were fantastic and Jack took over the midfield in the second half. That was good to see."

Phil Jones started at right back, with Clyne on the bench, before Jordan Henderson moved there to accommodate Adam Lallana in midfield.

"Jordan Henderson did very well at right-back," said Hodgson. "We were thinking that we would be limiting our options if we replaced Phil Jones with another defender. It was harsh on Nathaniel Clyne, he doesn't deserve that, but it was the best way to get Adam Lallana on.

"Luckily both moves worked out well, we dominated the game totally for long periods."

The win means that England have won all six of their games in Group E of European Championship 2016 Qualifying.
