Gareth Southgate pleased with England youngsters

England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate is pleased with the Under-20 side's performances at the Toulon Tournament.

Gareth Southgate has said that he is pleased with England's Under-20 side following their fourth-placed finish in the Toulon Tournament in France.

The Young Lions lost to Portugal in the third-placed playoff earlier today in their first appearance at the event in nine years.

The Under-21s manager told BT Sport: "Ultimately we are looking at players who can go into our first team and be a success with the seniors. There is no doubt that this week there are several I know who can go and do that.

"We needed that challenge of playing against some top nations to be able to see if they can cope with that. Quite clearly they can. I've got to be pleased with the performance. We've played against a top side and we've more than matched them.

"I would have to say results-wise we haven't got what we have deserved, but the two games we have lost have been by the finest of margins."

England's only win at the tournament came against Qatar.
