Hull City welcomed Sheffield Wednesday to the KC Stadium hoping to gain ground on Championship leaders Cardiff City.

The Owls were in need of three points for entirely different reasons, going into the game inside the relegation zone by a single point.

Reda Johnson's surprise opener for the visitors was cancelled out late in the second period by Hull captain Robert Koren, but there was late drama to come.

An own goal from home goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic restored Wednesday's lead and Michail Antonio sealed the win in stoppage time.

Find out how the action unfolded with our-minute-by-minute text commentary below.

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of tonight's Championship clash between high-fliers Hull and struggling Sheffield Wednesday. Team news on the way...

HULL: Jakupovic, Hobbs, Faye, Chester, Brady, Elmohamady, Quinn, Evans, Meyler, Koren, Aluko

SUBS: Oxley, Rosenior, Simpson, Cairney, McShane, Bruce, Proschwitz

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Kirkland, Buxton, Llera, Gardner, R.Johnson, Helan, Lee, Coke, McCabe, J.Johnson, Antonio

SUBS: Bywater, Taylor, Mattock, Semedo, Corry, Madine, Sidibe

The importance of this game for both sides cannot be overstated. Hull could use the three points to gain ground on Championship leaders Cardiff, while Sheffield Wednesday can break free of the bottom three following Peterborough's defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest earlier today.

Just one minute until kickoff here at the KC Stadium and the ground is positively bouncing. There's a real air of optimism about the place, and a glance at the league table will tell you exactly why.

Hull get the match under way.

Steve Bruce's side start confidently, going on the attack through Koren. The Slovakian picks the ball up along the left and sails in a cross that drifts out of play for a Wednesday goal kick.

SHOT! Sheffield Wednesday claim the first shot on target with a blistering 25-yard effort from Jermaine Johnson that required a good stop from Jakupovic to turn it over the bar.

A statement of intent their from Dave Jones's side. There may be a wide gulf between them in the league but this one could go either way if Wednesday produce a few more like that.

Wednesday are playing some good passing football here. Jones will be delighted with the way his side have set out their stall here. They're looking very organised. I think we are in for a closer game than the league standings suggest.

Meyler requires treatment on the sidelines after tumbling awkwardly. It looked nasty but he should be okay to soldier on I think.

Gardner gifts Hull a cheap corner, buckling under pressure, but the resulting delivery from Robbie Brady is poor, allowing Rhys McCabe to make the clearance. Hull appear to be having trouble finding their rhythm this evening.

Terrible challenge by Faye on Jermaine Johnson. He went in two-footed right under the nose of the referee but somehow escaped even a booking! I've seen straight reds for less than that!

CHANCE! Great cross in from the left from Brady. Aluko gets his head to it in the area but Llera does well to deflect it wide for a Hull corner.

Aluko shows what a threat his pace poses. He gets away from two defenders but his final touch is too heavy, allowing Llera to get in behind him and shepard the ball away from the danger zone.

GOAL! Hull City 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday (R Johnson)

The Owls stun the home crowd by snatching the lead from a set piece. Rhys McCabe's in-swinging free kick is headed in by the big left-back Reda Johnson. What a start for the visitors!

Hull respond by applying pressure at the other end as Ahmed Elmohamady's cross is directed goalwards by Abdoulaye Faye. Chris Kirkland pulls off a comfortable save.

SHOT! Wednesday come close to doubling their advantage through Michail Antonio, who forces an impressive stop from Eldin Jakupovic after his defence fail to deal with a corner.

Very impressive stuff from the visitors. This is how you play away from home. Organised at the back and in the centre of the park, and a threat going forward.

Hull force the Owls onto the back foot through Alan Quinn, whose strike through a crowd is deflected to safety. Bruce's side will have to do better than that if they want to get back into this one.

Hull have started to see more of the ball, but Wednesday look solid at the back, their defence making short work of a low cross by Elmohamady following a corner.

SHOT! It's another long-ranger from Jermaine Johnson. Hull gave him acres of space outside the box and he attempted to beat Jakupovic at his near post with an audacious strike. Another good save from the home shot-stopper!

CHANCE! Hull's best chance of the match comes late in the first half. Elmohamady out-paces his marker and whips its a cross from wide on the right. It's met by a bullet header from Quinn that flies wide of the mark.

SHOT! Hull are raising their game and piling on the pressure now. The ball falls invitingly for Aluko on the edge of the box, but he directs his strike straight at Kirkland, who gathers at the second attempt.

CHANCE! A gilt-edged opportunity for Hull to draw level goes begging as Kirkland pulls off a save to deny Koren in a one-on-one situation. Brilliant goalkeeping, but the Hull man should have done better!

Two minutes of stoppage time to be played.

HALF-TIME: Hull City 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Only one goal, but a great 45 minutes of football with talking points aplenty. Sheffield Wednesday were on top for much of the first half, playing what can only be described as perfect away football. But Hull piled on the pressure in the latter stages.

Reda Johnson's goal separates the teams at the break, but that terrible two-footed tackle by Abdoulaye Faye in the 18th minute is equally worthy of discussion. It's fair to say that Hull are lucky to still have 11 men on the pitch.

You can read our report on the first half here.

SUBSTITUTION: We have news of a half-time change for you. Semedo will replace McCabe for Sheff Wed in the second half. I think the latter must have picked up an injury. He did look like he was struggling towards the end of the first half.

We are back under way at the KC Stadium.

With Wednesday playing without a recognised striker, I think they will attempt to sit on that lead in this half. They did look vulnerable to the suckerpunch while Hull were in the midst of that purple patch at the end of the first period, though.

Wasteful play from Elmohamady! He finds his way around Llera and has plenty of teammates to pick out in the area, but goes for goal himself from a tight angle and blazes it over the bar!

Wednesday squander a free kick as Llera swings the ball into the danger zone. Antonio gets his head to it but it ends up in the stand.

Neither team has taken the game by the scruff of the neck in this second half. Wednesday look content to keep up the shutters and Hull appear short on ideas about how to break them down.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Hull fail to defend a free kick appropriately and Giles Coke scrambles the ball past Jakupovic. But the Owls' celebrations are cut short as the goal is ruled out! Why it has been disallowed is a mystery! I think the ref believes Coke kicked the ball out of Jakupovic's hands, but he didn't have it to begin with!

BOOKING! Hull's Brady gets the first yellow card of the evening for a foul on Lee. That's harsh considering Faye's challenge in the first half went unpunished.

Tensions are running high here. There's a real sense that Wednesday have suffered an injustice with that disallowed goal. Dave Jones will certainly have a few things to say if his side comes away with anything less than three points here.

Llera drives a free kick against the Hull wall, but Wednesday win a corner in the aftermath. Coke swings in a low cross that is easily cleared by the Hull defence.

SUBSTITUTION: Steve Bruce makes his first change, bringing on Jay Simpson to replace to Evans. Another attacker on the pitch is exactly what Hull need right now.

Half-chance for Hull as Brady's corner is headed towards goal by Jack Hobbs, but he directs his effort straight at Kirkland, an easy save for the Wednesday shot-stopper.

It's been a poor second half in truth. That Hull fight back we were expecting hasn't materialised and the only real talking point is a bad refereeing decision that went against the visitors.

SHOT! Another good effort from Jermaine Johnson, whose first-time strike from the edge of the box has too much bend on it to trouble Jakupovic. It goes behind for a Hull goal kick.

The frustration of the home fans is growing to palpable levels. Hull are struggling to create anything of note and if any side are going to score in the second period, it's looking like Wednesday.

SUBSTITUTION: Hull bring on Proschwitz in place of Hobbs. Bruce has broken up his back four to throw on another striker. Let's hope the hosts have more bite to them now, because that's what this second half needs.

GOAL! Hull City 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday (Koren)

Hull's captain steps up when they need him most! Elmohamady supplies an inviting cross for the Slovakian to head past a stranded Kirkland. It's against the run of play, but try telling the home supporters that!

SUBSTITUTION: Jermaine Johnson goes off and Mamady Sidibe comes on for the visitors.

GOAL! Hull City 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday (Jakupovic OG)

Oh my word, the game has been turned on its head! It just hasn't been the Hull goalkeeper's day! Miguel Llera swings in the corner and Jakupovic makes the catch, only to spill it into the net! To make matters worse, he collided with Reda Johnson during the scramble has to go off injured.

He took a nasty blow to the head there and is receiving treatment on the pitch. Fingers crossed he is okay.

SUBSTITUTION: Oxley is coming on to replace Jakupovic, who is still receiving treatment.

Jakupovic is still having his neck brace affixed. There will have to be a minimum of seven minutes added on here.

Jakupovic is still having his neck brace affixed. There will have to be a minimum of seven minutes added on here. He gets a standing ovation from the KC Stadium as he is stretchered off.

And we're back under way now. Not entirely sure how long is left, though.

Hull have a corner deep into stoppage time. First Brady then Elmohamady whip frantic crosses into the box, but Wednesday clear the danger and break for it...

GOAL! Hull City 1-3 Sheffield Wednesday (Antonio)

Wednesday deliver the killer blow deep into added time. Antonio leaves his marker behind to set up a one-on-one with Oxley. He rounds the keeper and fires into the bottom right corner. No less than what the visitors deserve!

When was the last time you saw a game of football that lasted more than 100 mins? We're not done yet either!

PENATLY! Simpson goes down under Helan's reckless challenge in the box and Hull win a 101st-minute penalty. Simpson steps up to take it himself, but Kirkland makes the save!

There goes the final whistle. It's been an eventful evening at the KC Stadium. Hull were below their usual standard, but let's take nothing away from Sheffield Wednesday, who are now out of the relegation zone.

FULL-TIME: Hull City 1-3 Sheffield Wednesday

We've had a bit of everything at the KC Stadium tonight. Four goals, controversial refereeing decisions, a late penalty and 14 minutes of added time. Plenty to reflect on in our forthcoming analysis.

That's all from me this evening. Thanks for joining us for this fiery Championship clash.
