Gary McAllister open to Leeds United backroom role

Gary McAllister admits that he finds current events at Leeds United "pretty sad to see", although he says he would be open to taking up a backroom role at the club.

Former Leeds United midfielder Gary McAllister has revealed that he would be open to taking up a backroom role at the club.

The 50-year-old, who is said to have been in the running to replace Brian McDermott as manager last year, made close to 300 appearances for the Whites in his six seasons at Elland Road.

McAllister admits that he finds current events at the West Yorkshire outfit "sad to see", but he has refused to rule out helping Leeds return to their former glory.

"It is very difficult to comment on the situation at Elland Road, because nobody quite understands what is going on there," the ex-Scotland skipper told Sport Mole. "It is all pretty sad to see, but I would love to see Leeds back in the Premier League one day - that goes without saying.

"We now need to wait and see what the owner does in the summer as far as recruitment is concerned. I'll be watching developments with a close eye. I still live in the Yorkshire area and Leeds are very close to my heart."

Uncertainty still remains over the future of manager Neil Redfearn, after owner Massimo Cellino hinted that he could sack the fan favourite this summer.

The situation could become clearer in the coming days, with the controversial Italian himself admitting that time is fast running out to make a decision.

McAllister, who is BT Sport's lead Scottish Football analyst, added: "I think if there is any chance to try and help Leeds United then I'm here. They know where I am."

Rangers vs. Queen of the South is exclusively live on BT Sport 1 from 3pm on Sunday. BT Sport will show every game from the Premiership PlayOffs live, covering the semi-finals on May 20 and 23 and the final on May 28 and 31.
