Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that a Premier League title win would be a fitting reward for captain Steven Gerrard.
The former centre-back, who made 737 appearances for the club before retiring last season, believes that a first league winners' medal for the skipper would be more than deserved.
Speaking in his Daily Mail column, Carragher said: "After the Rafael Benitez era was over (in 2010) we both felt our chance to become champions had gone. Certainly when Brendan Rodgers took over that feeling was more acute because we knew it was a project that would take a while to get going, so to be in this position [of second] is not something Stevie would want to let slip.
"Followers of Chelsea and Manchester City will disagree – so too will Manchester United and Everton fans – but there would be no more romantic end to this season than seeing Stevie lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield on May 11.
"For his quality and loyalty, it would cap a glorious career."
The Reds travel to Manchester United on Sunday.
