Steven Gerrard backs new-look England

Steven Gerrard backs the new-look England side to flourish under Wayne Rooney's captaincy.

Steven Gerrard has tipped England's youngsters to come to the fore for Roy Hodgson's new-look side.

The Liverpool captain stepped down from his post as skipper of the Three Lions after he announced his decision to retire from international football after the World Cup.

Frank Lampard also recently called time on his career with England, and Ashley Cole quit after he was omitted from the 23-man squad for Brazil.

"I can only judge England on the World Cup and it wasn't good enough, and I was part of that and I take responsibility, but there are certainly top players in this country," Gerrard told Sky Sports News.

"Look at the talent out there, Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Luke Shaw, Jack Wilshere, the talent is there. You've got Wayne Rooney who has been given the captaincy and he'll look after them now and help groom them as well, so for me it will turn.

"I hope it turns for Roy Hodgson because I have respect for him as a man and a manager, and I believe that the talent is there, it just needs shaping."

England play Norway on Wednesday.
