Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku's record vs. Liverpool

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League showdown between Manchester United and Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at Romelu Lukaku's past record against the title challengers.

Still widely regarded as the biggest match in English football, Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday with both sides knowing that victory could be crucial to their season's goals.

United have been revitalised since losing 3-1 at Anfield in the reverse fixture - a result which spelled the end of Jose Mourinho's reign and ushered in the interim spell of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer has since won 11 of his 13 matches at the helm to lift United into the top four of the Premier League table, having been 11 points adrift following that December defeat to Liverpool.

One player who has struggled to keep pace with the new era is Romelu Lukaku, who has lost his role as the team's number one striker to Marcus Rashford and may have to make do with a place on the bench this weekend.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the Belgian has fared against Liverpool in the past.

Lukaku has a notoriously poor record against the 'big six', but his displays against Liverpool have been among his better ones from that select group of teams.

However, he has still ended up on the winning side in just three of his previous 16 meetings with the Reds across all competitions, losing half of those including the 3-1 reverse at Anfield this season.

The last of Lukaku's five goals against Liverpool came back in October 2015 too, when he earned a point for Everton in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The 25-year-old is therefore yet to score against Liverpool during his time as a United player, although he did register his only assist in the corresponding fixture last season to help United to a 2-1 win.

Lukaku's other two wins over Liverpool both came during his one season at West Bromwich Albion - scoring in both games - and he made it four goals in the space of three meetings the following campaign with a brace for Everton.
