First locking horns as St. Mark's (West Gorton) and Newton Heath all the way back in 1881, the teams now known as Manchester City and Manchester United have crossed paths in 195 competitive derbies, and the men in red still possess the city bragging rights.
Indeed, 80 of those clashes have seen Man United come up trumps, while Man City have got the better of their formerly noisy neighbours on 62 occasions, and 53 Manchester derbies have ended honours even down the years.
While Man United are the undisputed kings when it comes to the overall head-to-head record, the Citizens have been closing the gap during the past few seasons, prevailing in eight of their last 12 Manchester derbies since the start of 2021.
One of those four aberrations came during their crisis period in December 2024, though, as Amad Diallo capped off an astonishing late turnaround for Man United in a 2-1 Etihad win, ending a three-game losing run on Man City's turf.
Previously, Pep Guardiola oversaw a nervy penalty-shootout success in the 2024 Community Shield over Man United, who were left to lament missed spot kicks from Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans as the reigning Premier League champions avenged their shock FA Cup final loss to Erik ten Hag's men a couple of months before.
However, Man United had endured a three-match winless run versus Man City before working their Wembley magic, including defeat in the 2023 FA Cup final, and they had lost three straight Premier League games on Man City's turf by an aggregate score of 13-5 before December 2024.
On the flip side, Man United's run of netting either consolation or critical goals at the Etihad means that they have scored in each of their last eight trips to Man City's turf, last drawing a blank in April 2017.
Of all the documented scorers in Manchester derbies, no player enjoyed this battle more than Wayne Rooney, who struck 11 times against the Citizens in his career. Francis Lee (10), Sergio Aguero (nine), Joe Hayes (nine) and Sir Bobby Charlton (nine) were also fond of a goal on derby day.
