Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney refutes Paul Scholes claims

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney denies that he is past his best.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has refuted claims from former teammate Paul Scholes, who accused him of being past his best.

The England international said that the retired midfielder "upset a lot of people" at Old Trafford with his remarks, and was quick to disagree with them.

"I'm sure he's upset a lot of people at Man United because they see me as worthy of signing a new deal at the club, so they obviously have got a different opinion to what Paul has," Rooney told reporters.

The former Everton forward went on to say that Scholes's comments were "strange" considering he was part of the United coaching staff last season.

"It was a big strange, I'll be honest, but he has his opinions and he's entitled to them," Rooney added.

"I don't agree with it, but he's probably the best player I've ever played with, so I'm not going to knock him as a player, but I don't agree with his point. I'm sure he has his reasons for it."

Rooney is expected to feature for England in their opening World Cup match against Italy on Saturday.
