Newcastle United hold off Norwich City charge

Two of the Premier League's out-of-form sides, Norwich and Newcastle, play out a goalless draw at Carrow Road.

Newcastle United survived a late Norwich City onslaught to come away from Carrow Road with a draw this afternoon.

It was the first time in four games that either side had picked up a point as they had both lost their three previous Premier League fixtures.

In a first half of few goalscoring chances, Papiss Cisse and Gabriel Obertan both forced smart saves out of the recalled Mark Bunn.

Simeon Jackson was a lone figure in the Canaries' attack but his withdrawal and the introduction of Grant Holt ignited Norwich just after the hour mark.

Anthony Pilkington sent a long-range effort over the bar before Russell Martin struck the post with his low drive.

Tim Krul then produced a fine save to deny Pilkington and an opener may have been forthcoming for the Canaries had Bradley Johnson made more of the rebound.

It was all Norwich in the final stages and they came close to snatching maximum points when Pilkington just failed to turn Holt's header across goal into the net.

The two teams are now bottom of the Premier League form standings, having only picked up four points from a possible 18.
