Chris Wilder: 'Northampton Town surviving all that matters'

Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder says that all his focus is on the weekend clash against Newport, but believes events off the field take precedence.

Chris Wilder has admitted that the most important result for Northampton Town this week will relate to events off the pitch.

The Cobblers, who owe the HMRC £166,000 in unpaid taxes, have been unable to pay their players or staff.

A petition has been lodged to wind up the League Two outfit, who have been hit by numerous problems over the past few months.

Despite the potentially bleak outcome, Wilder says that all he can do is prepare his squad for this weekend's game against Newport County.

"The main event this week is ensuring that the football club survives," he told the club's official website. "All we can do is keep doing our job but hopefully the right decision will be made and if we do get through this period there will be a bright future.

"That's the bigger picture, this football club has got a proud history, it's been here for a long time and hopefully it will be here a long time after we've all gone. All we can do at the moment is keep doing our job and it's another tough game for us on Saturday.

"We'd love to finish the month off in good fashion, it's been an excellent month for us in terms of points and performances and we really can put the icing on the cake if we go and get a result on Saturday. We'd like to defend a little bit better and I'm sure we will do but as we've talked about we are going for games and that can sometimes leave us a little bit open."

According to the Northampton Chronicle, Town will take a full selection of players to South Wales despite the failure to pay their wages.
