Maria Sharapova knocked out by Svetlana Kuznetsova in Madrid semi-final

Maria Sharapova is knocked out by Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets in the semi-final of the Madrid Open.

Maria Sharapova has failed to reach the final of the Madrid Open following a 6-2 6-4 defeat to Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Russian former world number one was put on the back foot from the outset as she lost serve early in the first set.

Kuznetsova took control of the court and looked comfortable on the clay surface as she went another break up, which was enough to give her the lead.

Sharapova, who didn't create a single break-point opportunity in the opening set, lost serve once again in the second, allowing Kuznetsova to take full advantage.

The 28-year-old tried to fight her way back, but it wasn't to be as Kuznetsova wrapped up the contest to seal a place in the final.
