Sixth seed Angelique Kerber has seen off Ekaterina Makarova to book her place in round three of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
The German saved a break point in the opening set before claiming it 6-3 with a single break of the Russian's serve.
Kerber was in trouble at the start of the second as a break left her 1-3 down, but she rallied to break back three times and seal the win 6-3.
Italian Roberta Vinci is next up for Kerber following her comprehensive 6-0 6-0 triumph over Ana Ivanovic on Thursday.
