Novak Djokovic comfortably through to second round

Novak Djokovic comfortably sees off Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in the first round of the US Open.

Novak Djokovic is through to the second round of the US Open after a convincing straight-sets win over Diego Schwartzman at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The world number one eased to victory over the 22-year-old 6-1 6-2 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes as he ruthlessly put Schwartzman, who was playing in his first tour-level hard court match, to the sword.

"It's never easy to start a US Open smoothly," Djokovic told reporters after the match. "I'm sure I'll be fresh and motivated to play [in the second round]."

The top-seed will face France's Paul-Henri Mathieu in the next round.
