Inter Milan have reportedly moved into pole position to complete the signing of Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic in January.
Manager Ernesto Valverde recognises the need to address a bloated squad once the window opens, with seven players competing for three midfield spots.
Following the arrival of Frenkie de Jong, Rakitic has been consigned to just two starts in La Liga so far this season.
According to the Daily Mail, Inter are currently leading the race to secure the Croatia international's signature in January.
It is claimed that Juventus and Manchester United are both interested, with Rakitic said to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top target.
Barcelona are also reportedly willing to dispense with Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti and Arturo Vidal over the next year.
