Lee Johnson: "To beat Manchester United is incredible"

Lee Johnson admits to having "an overwhelming feeling of pride" after his Bristol City side knocked EFL Cup holders Manchester United out of the competition.

Lee Johnson has described Bristol City's shock 2-1 win over Manchester United in the EFL Cup as "incredible".

Joe Bryan gave the Robins a 51st-minute lead at Ashton Gate on Wednesday night before Zlatan Ibrahimovic drew the visitors level just before the hour.

With the game looking set to go to extra time, Korey Smith struck in the third minute of injury time to dethrone the current holders and send the Championship side into the semi-finals.

"It's an overwhelming feeling of pride, to beat Manchester United is incredible," Johnson told reporters. "They are a special group. It has been a long time since we had a result like that at Ashton Gate.

"The lads didn't want to go into extra time and the scenes that winner set off were unbelievable. My dad always says he's the most successful Bristol City manager so I have maybe pushed him close tonight!

"You don't want a pitch invasion but I'm sure everyone appreciates the passion in that result. I don't think many fans will be turning up for work tomorrow, they'll be on the cider."

Bristol City's reward for reaching the semi-finals is a tie with Premier League leaders Manchester City, with the first leg to be played at the Etihad Stadium in the week beginning January 8 and the return leg two weeks later at Ashton Gate.
