Pep Guardiola has asked Manchester City to sign two defenders in 2025, according to a report.

The Catalan coach has entered his ninth season in charge of the Citizens and is currently working with a depleted squad amidst the club's growing injury crisis.

Over 11 first-team players have been sidelined with some form of injury so far this season, including defensive quartet Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, who were all either left out or forced to withdraw from their respective national team squads this month.

All four players have featured regularly at centre-back when fit, while Josko Gvardiol, Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis have operated as full-backs under Guardiola.

Laporte addresses Real Madrid rumours amid ongoing transfer speculation

Al-Nassr centre-back Aymeric Laporte has said that he is open to making the move to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are expected to sign a new central defender during the January transfer window, with the Spanish and European champions losing Eder Militao for the remainder of the campaign due to a serious knee injury.

Long-term absentee David Alaba is being backed to make his return either at the end of next month or in early January, but there are concerns when it comes to the Austrian due to the amount of time that he has spent on the sidelines.

Real Madrid are wary of putting too much pressure on Alaba in the second half of the campaign, which is expected to lead to an experienced centre-back arriving at Bernabeu during the January transfer window.

Barcelona sporting director Deco has said that his club are not planning to be active during the January transfer window.

The Catalan giants entered the November international break off the back of a 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad, but it has still been an impressive opening few months to the 2024-25 campaign for Hansi Flick's side.

Barcelona are top of the La Liga table, six points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, while they are sixth in the overall Champions League table, picking up nine points from their four European matches this season.

There have been suggestions that the club are looking to make additions during the January market, but Deco has insisted that "the squad is fine", with any transfer business on hold until next summer.

Nacho has ruled out the possibility of returning to Real Madrid amid suggestions that Los Blancos were considering making an attempt to re-sign him during the January transfer window.

The 34-year-old surprisingly decided against signing a new contract at Bernabeu over the summer, instead making the move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al Qadsiah FC.

Nacho has made 12 appearances for his Saudi Arabian outfit this season, and he is due to represent the club until at least June 2026, having penned a two-year contract following his exit from Real Madrid.

There have recently been suggestions that Los Blancos were considering making an attempt to bring the Spaniard back in January following Eder Militao's severe knee injury, which will rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

"The destination seems clear": Alonso to leave Leverkusen with Grimaldo?

    © Imago

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly set his sights on an exit from the club next summer, and plans to take key man Alex Grimaldo with him.

The in-demand coach opted to stay at Leverkusen this summer, despite strong links to former club Liverpool, who were searching for a new manager following the exit of Jurgen Klopp.

Alonso also turned down a move to another of his former sides, Bayern Munich - the club that he usurped to hand Leverkusen their first ever Bundesliga title last season.

This campaign has not been as favourable for Die Werkself though, as they have taken just 17 points from their opening 10 games, and are nine points behind Bayern, with just one win in their last six.

Arsenal will reportedly allow out-of-favour defender Jakub Kiwior to leave the club on loan in January.

The Polish international joined Arsenal from Italian side Spezia on a five-and-a-half year deal back in January 2023, but has never become a regular for the club.

Kiwior has made 26 starts for the Gunners since joining almost two years ago, but only two of those have come this season, and they were both in the EFL Cup to lower-league opponents Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End.

Increased opportunities came Kiwior's way last season due to injuries concerning Jurrien Timber, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Barcelona midfielder Pablo Torre has not ruled out the possibility of leaving the club in January, after seeing his game time reduced recently.

Torre was close to leaving the club over the summer, but eventually decided to stay, and has been rewarded for that decision by flourishing when given the opportunity by new manager Hansi Flick.

The youngster started three successive games for the Catalans in late October, scoring against Villarreal, and helping Flick's side to a home win over Getafe.

However, since the return of Frenkie de Jong, Gavi and Fermin Lopez from injury, Torre's minutes have been slashed, playing just 15 minutes in Barca's last eight games.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has revealed that he was "desperate" to join Chelsea in 2022.

In almost two years at St James' Park, Gordon has established himself as one of the most important players in the Magpies first-team squad.

A total of 15 goals and 12 assists have been contributed during his 77 appearances in all competitions, that return also ensuring that he has become a regular in the England squad.

However, Gordon's career-path could have been different had Everton not rejected an approach from Chelsea back in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Man City, Liverpool beware! Arsenal 'monitoring' in-demand midfielder

    © Imago

Arsenal could rival Manchester City and Liverpool for the signature of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The 25-year-old has developed into one of the most valued deep-lying midfielders in Europe during his time with La Liga side Real Sociedad, where he has spent his entire career and has made a total of 204 appearances in all competitions.

Zubimendi played in 31 La Liga games for Imanol Alguacil's side as they finished sixth in the table last season, while he also made four appearances in Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign.

The midfielder has played down suggestions that he is keen to leave the Reale Arena, where he is under contract until June 2027, but that has not stopped the rumour mill from linking him with a big-money switch to the Premier League.

Could Liverpool's Slot raid former rival for 21-year-old attacker?

PSV Eindhoven's Ricardo Pepi celebrates scoring on October 26, 2024
    © Imago

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up whether to make a move for in-form PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi.

After chipping in with nine goals in 41 appearances for PSV last season, Pepi has since made a promising start to the 2024-25 campaign, scoring six goals in his opening 11 Eredivisie matches.

The 21-year-old is PSV's joint-top scorer in the Eredivisie this season, despite starting just three games, while only three players in Europe's top-seven league have a better goals-per-90 ratio than the American (1.29).

According to CaughtOffside, Pepi's impressive form has caught the eye of several top clubs in Europe, including Liverpool.

    © Imago

Barcelona have reportedly made a decision over whether they will pursue a move for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Merseyside-born right-back has been at his boyhood club Liverpool since the age of six and has made 325 first-team appearances in total across all competitions since and including his debut in 2016.

Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as one of the best right-backs - particularly from a creative perspective - in Europe, chipping in with 19 goals and 83 assists for the Reds, and he was a key cog in the Jurgen Klopp machine during his legendary spell in charge of the club.

The 25-year-old has won eight trophies at Liverpool, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and two EFL Cups, and he is hoping to lift more silverware with the club this season under new boss Arne Slot.

Zubimendi asking price 'not an obstacle' for Man City amid January interest

    © Imago

Manchester City are reportedly going to give Real Sociedad "a long and hard winter" in their pursuit of midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Citizens have been tipped to delve into the January transfer market to recruit reinforcements as Pep Guardiola is currently working with a squad down to its bare bones amidst a growing injury crisis.

Arguably the biggest absentee for City is star lynchpin Rodri, who is ruled out for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury that he sustained in September.

Rodri recently revealed that he has 'challenged himself' to participate in club games before the end of the current season, although a return before Man City's FIFA Club World Cup campaign next July seems unlikely at this stage.

    © Imago

Barcelona sporting director Deco has insisted that his club are not currently looking to bring in a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, with the striker in excellent form for the Catalan giants this season.

Lewandowski has scored 19 goals and registered two assists in 17 appearances for Barcelona during the 2024-25 campaign, and the experienced forward has a contract at Camp Nou until June 2026.

The Poland international will be 37 at the start of next season, though, and there has been a host of speculation surrounding a possible forward incoming at Barcelona next summer.

Deco has said that the club are not currently considering signing a new striker, with Lewandowski set to continue for 'at least one more season', while he was asked directly about both Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyokeres.

"Will happen" - Deco confident Barcelona 'cornerstone' will sign new contract

    © Imago

Barcelona sporting director Deco is confident that the club will be able to sign Pedri to a new long-term contract.

The 21-year-old has had an injury-free start to the 2024-25 campaign, making 17 appearances in all competitions, contributing three goals and two assists in the process.

Pedri is regarded as one of Barcelona's untouchables, with the midfielder not for sale under any circumstances, but his contract at Camp Nou is due to expire in June 2026.

The majority of the world's biggest clubs would be interested in the Spain international if it became apparent that he could be available for transfer, but Deco is confident that Barcelona will soon be able to provide some good news in relation to his future.

Eriksen was heavily linked with a departure during the recent transfer window, with Man United believed to have made him available for transfer, but he stayed with the 20-time English champions.

The 32-year-old has been in strong form this season, scoring four goals and registering three assists in 13 appearances, and he bounced back from an injury to feature off the bench against Leicester City last weekend.

The English giants are believed to be keen to sign a forward and a central midfielder at the start of 2025, and according to TEAMtalk, Baturina is firmly on the club's radar.

The 21-year-old has been in excellent form for Dinamo during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring twice and registering seven assists in 17 appearances in all competitions, including one goal and one assist in the league phase of the Champions League.
