Rickie Lambert rescues Southampton against Fulham

Rickie Lambert scores from the penalty spot to help Southampton draw 1-1 with Fulham away from home.

Southampton have scored a late goal to hold Fulham to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.

Rickie Lambert found the target from the penalty spot in the 85th minute to cancel out a Dimitar Berbatov goal in the first half.

The Bulgarian striker scored in the eighth minute when he slotted home from close range after Kelvin Davis failed to properly claim Ashkan Dejagah's cross from the right.

Berbatov almost made it 2-0 in the 16th minute with a header from Alexander Kacaniklic's cross, but his attempt from close range went wide.

Fulham continued to dominate proceedings at home, with Southampton's first real chance coming only in the 20th minute when Jack Cork tried his luck from outside the box; however, Mark Schwarzer made a good save.

Southampton goalkeeper Davis was called into action in the 34th minute as he narrowly kept out a cross from John Arne Riise from going over the line.

The Saints came out of the blocks the quicker of the two sides in the second half, as Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis tried their luck inside the opening 10 minutes, before Dejagah shot wide for the hosts.

Kerim Frei had a decent chance for Fulham midway through the second half, but failed to keep his snapshot on target.

However, Southampton eventually bagged the equaliser five minutes from time when Chris Baird conceded a penalty with a handball offence.

Lambert stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from 12 yards.
