John Aldridge: "Quality rather than quantity" for Liverpool

John Aldridge believes that Liverpool need no more than four new players during the summer break.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has insisted that wholesale changes to the club's playing staff are not required during the summer transfer window.

A large number of players have been linked with a switch to Anfield during the summer, with some reports having claimed that manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to recruit at least six fresh faces.

However, Aldridge feels that no more than four players are required to improve the Reds significantly.

"The challenge facing Rodgers is to repeat the trick in the transfer market this summer. We need three or four players to strengthen the squad. It's about quality rather than quantity," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"Obviously with Carra (Jamie Carragher) retiring and big question marks over the futures of Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates, he needs at least one centre-back and possibly more. We also need more height and strength in midfield. I'd like to see the manager sign someone with a physical presence who can get around the pitch.

"We still need another option up front – a goalscorer to compete for a place with Luis Suarez and [Daniel] Sturridge. If we achieve all that, then we will go into next season with real optimism."

Liverpool finished last season in seventh place.
