Versatile Bayern Munich defender David Alaba could be on his way to Premier League champions Liverpool early next year, according to a report.

David Alaba has reportedly indicated that he is open to joining Liverpool in January ahead of his Bayern Munich contract expiring.

The Austria international has been caught up in a public slanging match with Bayern over a new deal, which he has been unable to agree.

Bayern are now expected to cash in on the versatile defender early in the New Year to avoid losing him for free at the end of the campaign.

Football Insider reports that Liverpool have made their interest known, having lost Virgil van Dijk and now fellow centre-back Joe Gomez to long-term injuries.

Alaba, comfortable playing in the heart of defence, is said to be interested in a new challenge elsewhere and a move to Anfield is on the cards.

However, the Premier League champions may face competition from the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus.
