The hosts took the lead in the 17th minute when Ricardo Vaz Te nodded in from close range after Andy Carroll had headed back across goal from Matt Jarvis's cross.

However, United got level on 30 minutes as Antonio Valencia tapped home following some slick work on the left from Shinji Kagawa.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent during the remainder of the half, but neither were able to gain the initiative.
