Luke Shaw 'expected to be fit' for Manchester derby showdown

A report claims that Luke Shaw is in contention to start Manchester United's showdown with Manchester City next Saturday, despite being withdrawn from England's squad.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is reportedly winning his battle to be fit in time for next weekend's derby showdown with Manchester City.

The full-back was withdrawn from England's squad for the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia as a precaution, having failed to take part in training on Saturday.

Three Lions boss Sam Allardyce has since confirmed that Shaw had not picked up a fresh injury, and The Mirror reports that the 21-year-old - who missed virtually the entirety of last season after breaking his leg in two places - should be in contention for Saturday's match at Old Trafford.

Shaw has started all three of United's league games so far this season, playing a key part in the club's perfect start under new manager Jose Mourinho.
