Steve McClaren: 'We rode our luck to beat Bournemouth'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren admits that his side rode their luck on the way to registering a 1-0 victory away at Bournemouth.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has acknowledged that his side caused their own problems during their 1-0 win away at Bournemouth.

The Magpies made it seven points from four games thanks to a goal from Ayoze Perez, but McClaren admitted that his team had not performed as well as they have done in recent weeks.

The 54-year-old told BT Sport: "Sometimes, football cannot be explained. We have played so well recently but not got the results or scored goals, but today, we couldn't play football. It was like a hot potato.

"One bit of quality to get the goal, and a little bit more of that and we would have been comfortable, but we just caused our own problems today. Credit to Bournemouth, they just kept coming and coming, played with intensity and created chances.

"We worked hard for our luck. We haven't had it in recent weeks but we had it today and we will take it."

Newcastle's win was just their second in the top flight this season.
