England boss Roy Hodgson offers his sympathy to Harry Redknapp after the 64-year-old is sacked by Spurs.

England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that he was "sad to hear" about Harry Redknapp's departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

Redknapp, who had been heavily tipped to take over the national side instead of Hodgson, was dismissed by the Premier League club on Thursday after four years in charge at White Hart Lane.

"I was very sad to hear the news," said Hodgson. "I've texted [Redknapp] this afternoon, I don't expect a reply because I imagine he will be absolutely snowed under at the moment with sympathetic messages.

"It came as a surprise to me and I'm disappointed for him, and I wish him all the best. And I hope the next job that he wants comes along soon very soon and he'll be happy in that job."

Redknapp, 64, has admitted that he has no intention of retiring from the game.
