Richarlison scores a brace to help Tottenham Hotspur claim a commanding 4-1 Premier League home win over Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison netted a brace to lead his side to a comfortable 4-1 home win over Newcastle United, bringing an end to a five-game winless run.

Spurs got up and running just before the half-hour mark when Destiny Udogie tapped home from close range.

With momentum firmly in their favour, the hosts doubled their advantage in the 38th minute courtesy of Richarlison's first goal since September 16.

After having to wait nearly three months for a goal, the 26-year-old celebrated another in the second period, before Son Heung-min dispatched a late penalty to make it 4-0.

Although Joelinton found the net in stoppage time, it provided little consolation to the visitors, who fell to a second straight defeat.

Tottenham's first victory since October 27 leaves them in fifth position and four points better off than their seventh-placed opponents.

Both teams came into the contest off the back of disappointing results after Spurs gave up a lead to lose to West Ham United, while Newcastle United suffered a heavy 3-0 loss in their away meeting with Everton.

The Magpies had an early chance to open the scoring when Joelinton teed up Bruno Guimaraes, but the Paraguay international was unable to keep his composure, slicing his effort harmlessly wide of the target.

Following a sluggish start, Spurs went close through Cristian Romero, who rose high from a corner to direct his header towards goal, only for Miguel Almiron to hook the ball away from danger.

With Tottenham continuing to pile on the pressure, an injury-hit Newcastle side could only keep their hosts at bay until the 26th minute when Udogie registered his first Premier League goal to get Ange Postecoglou's side up and running.

After playing the ball out to Son, the full-back continued his run into the box to tuck the ball in from the South Korean's low cross.

As it proved, Son managed to provide another assist before half time when he drifted past Kieran Trippier and cut the ball back for Richarlison to sweep home.

The weary-looking visitors were fortunate not to concede a third in the closing stages of the first period, with Brennan Johnson skimming the outside of the post.

Despite making an encouraging start to the second half, Newcastle's hopes of salvaging a positive result were quashed by Richarlison on the hour mark.

The Brazil international brought down Pedro Porro's long pass, before sliding the ball through the legs of Martin Dubravka.

With Newcastle on the ropes, Johnson went agonisingly close to scoring his second goal of the season, only for the woodwork to deny him for the second time in the contest.

Moments after Romero escaped any punishment for a nasty-looking challenge, Tottenham compounded Newcastle's misery by adding a fourth goal from the penalty spot.

After being brought down by Dubravka's clumsy challenge, Son picked himself up to fire his spot kick into the bottom corner.

There was still time left for Joelinton to give the away support something to cheer about, slotting past Guglielmo Vicario to deny Spurs a clean sheet.

The Magpies will have to pick themselves up for Wednesday's crucial Champions League clash with AC Milan, while Tottenham will begin their preparations for Saturday's away game against Nottingham Forest.
