Mark Hughes will be forced to trim the wage bill at Stoke City if he is appointed as Tony Pulis's successor at the Britannia Stadium.

Mark Hughes will be forced to cut costs at Stoke City if he is appointed as the club's new manager, according to a report.

The former Queens Park Rangers boss is the favourite to replace Tony Pulis at the Britannia Stadium, after the Potters and the 55-year-old parted ways last week.

Hughes has been set a huge task by the Stoke board to trim the wage bill at the club and alter the team's direct playing style forged under Pulis, reports The Mirror.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates suggested that he wanted the club to go in a "different direction" following the seven-year tenure of Pulis.
