Ukraine have criticised a threatened boycott of the 2012 European Championships by several European leaders.
The protest relates to the alleged mistreatment of jailed former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, who is currently on a hunger strike after reportedly being beaten by prison guards.
However, a statement from the Ukrainian foreign ministry has slammed the threats, claiming that they are attempts to politicise the tournament, which will be jointly held by them and Poland.
"We view as destructive attempts to politicise sporting events, which since ancient times have played a paramount role in improving understanding and agreement between nations," the statement said.
"A successful championship will be a victory not for politicians, parties or ideologies, but for all Ukrainians and Poles. Its failure will be a loss for millions."
The tournament will take place between June 8 and July 1, marking the first time either Ukraine or Poland have hosted it.
