David Ferrer overcame a spirited Andy Roddick to progress to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, winning 6-7(5) 6-2 7-6(2).
Roddick took a tight first set in a tie-break before the Spanish world number five started to take control.
His combination of solid groundstrokes and some error-strewn service games from the American gave Ferrer the second set before another tie break in the third.
Roddick is usually clinical in the breakers due to his service but it was Ferrer who came out on top, as the 29-year-old failed to find a regular first serve.
Ferrer will now either face Rafael Nadal's conqueror Florian Mayer or compatriot Feliciano Lopez in the last four.
