The visitors made an ideal start by taking the lead within three minutes of kickoff when Ivan Ramis rose unmarked in the box to nod in a corner.
Villa responded with a chance of their own just two minutes later as Andreas Weimann fired a shot in on goal, but Ali Al-Habsi was equal to it.
Shaun Maloney should have doubled his side's lead in the 20th minute when Jean Beausejour squared the ball to him, but he drilled his effort over the bar from the edge of the box.
Franco di Santo was the next to squander a chance for the Latics after James McCarthy robbed Stephen Ireland of possession before finding the striker, who could only steer his effort into the sidenetting.
Villa came within inches of getting a late equaliser two minutes before the break when Christian Benteke nodded the ball down to Brett Holman, whose left-footed strike came back off the crossbar.
