Preview: Club Brugge vs. Borussia Dortmund - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Champions League match between Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Club Brugge host Borussia Dortmund in Group F of the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Belgian side looking to remain unbeaten after a promising start in the competition.

Dortmund, meanwhile, will be aiming to end a run of four consecutive away defeats in the Champions League as they look to climb above their opponents in the group.

Philippe Clement's side are competing in the Champions League group stage for the third consecutive season, having finished third in the last two campaigns and dropping into the Europa League as a result.

This season they have been handed a more favourable draw, though, and will fancy their chances of causing an upset by progressing to the knockout stages for the first time in the club's history.

Charles De Ketelaere's last-minute strike gave Brugge three points on matchday one in a 2-1 win at Zenit St Petersburg, before Hans Vanaken's penalty earned a creditable 1-1 draw at home to Lazio.

Despite a promising start, Clement will be more than aware there is plenty of work left to do in order to qualify for the next stage. He will be hoping his side can capitalise on Dortmund's generally poor away form in Europe to cause another upset.

Indeed, Dortmund's 3-1 loss at Lazio on matchday one was their sixth defeat in eight away games in this competition, which is a record that Lucien Favre must improve if his side have any serious aspirations of competing in the latter stages.

BVB were not overly impressive in defeating Zenit 2-0 either, with Jadon Sancho's late penalty breaking the deadlock before Erling Braut Haaland sealed the three points in injury time.

The Norwegian striker missed the weekend's 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld with a knee issue, but should be fit for the short trip to Belgium.

However, Favre will undoubtedly have one eye on Saturday's Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, with any sign of complacency or squad rotation sure to boost a Brugge side becoming more experienced and confident at this level.

Team News

Club Brugge's Simon Mignolet looks dejected after Manchester United's Odion Ighalo scores their second goal on February 27, 2020© Reuters

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet should retain his place in between the posts having ousted Ethan Horvath as the first choice number one at Brugge.

Clement utilised a back five against Lazio and may do the same against a Dortmund side who will pose a huge threat to their defence.

Haaland should return to the side, but Mats Hummels may be rested having picked up a thigh issue after scoring a brace in the 2-0 win at Arminia.

Losing Hummels would be a major blow for Favre and his side, who are already without other defensive options with Emre Can, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Marcel Schmelzer and Nico Schulz all still sidelined.

Club Brugge possible starting lineup:
Mignolet; Mata, Kossounou, Deli; Diatta, Vormer, Rits, Vanaken, Sobol; Bonaventure, De Ketelaere

Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Burki; Meunier, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro; Dahoud, Witsel; Sancho, Reus, Reyna; Haaland

We say: Club Brugge 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Should Haaland and Hummels win their fitness battles, we expect Dortmund to have a little too much quality in both boxes for Brugge, who have not won a group match at home in this competition since 2005.
