Inter Milan have taken the captain's armband away from centre-forward Mauro Icardi.
Icardi, whose current contract with Inter will expire at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, has scored 15 times in 28 appearances in all competitions during the 2018-19 campaign.
The 25-year-old has 122 goals in 210 games for Inter since arriving from Sampdoria in 2013, meanwhile, and has been strongly linked with a move away from San Siro over the last 12 months.
Amid reported interest from both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, Inter have decided to take the captain's armband away from Icardi, suggesting that the Argentine could be on his way out of the club.
"The club can confirm that Samir Handanovic is the new Inter captain," read a tweet from the Italian giants on Wednesday morning.
Inter have lost three of their last four matches in all competitions but returned to winning ways at the weekend with a 1-0 victory at Parma in Serie A.
