Former Leeds United captain Sol Bamba is thought to be close to a deal to join Nigel Pearson's Derby County.
The 31-year-old centre-back left Elland Road at the end of the transfer window "for personal reasons" and appeared to be heading for a move to League One outfit Bury.
According to The Huddersfield Examiner, however, Bamba has been training with Pearson's side for the last week and is expected to sign a deal in the coming days.
"He got in contact with me and asked if it was OK for him to come in training," Pearson told the newspaper.
"I have worked with him before [at Leicester City] and it is a surprise he is a free agent, but that is where we are at the minute.
"I don't think it is necessarily the right thing for me to expand on, at the moment."
The Rams have endured a disappointing start to the Championship season and sit 22nd in the table after a return of just six points from the first nine games.
