How Liverpool could line up against Aston Villa

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up in Friday's FA Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa.

Liverpool will be looking to gain some revenge on Aston Villa when the two teams lock horns at Villa Park in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday night.

Villa recorded a 7-2 win over the English champions in the Premier League earlier this season and will be desperate to make it back-to-back defeats for the Reds, who lost 1-0 at Southampton on Monday.

The Merseyside giants have won seven FA Cups but have not lifted the trophy since 2006, while they have struggled to make an impression in the competition since Jurgen Klopp's arrival as head coach.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up at Villa Park.

Konstantinos Tsimikas, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are all still injured for Liverpool, but Klopp will make wholesale changes to his starting XI on Friday.

A new goalkeeper and a new back four, potentially including James Milner, should take to the field, with Rhys Williams, Neco Williams and Nat Phillips also in line for starts.

Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could both keep their spots in midfield following spells on the sidelines, though, with Curtis Jones likely to join the pair in the middle of the park.

There could also be three changes in attack with Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino in line to replace Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane ahead of the clash with Manchester United.

A switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation cannot be ruled out, though, and it would not be too much of a surprise if Shaqiri, Origi and Minamino all operated alongside one of the team's usual front three.
