Manchester City reportedly refute suggestions that former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is poised to replace Roberto Mancini following the appointment of director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Manchester City have reportedly quashed suggestions that the appointment of new football director Txiki Begiristain is the stepping stone to bringing Pep Guardiola to the Etihad Stadium.

The Premier League champions announced the arrival of Begiristain, who previously worked at Barcelona, as their director of football yesterday.

Since the appointment, rumours have emerged claiming that ex-Barca boss Guardiola is next in line to take over at City, despite current manager Roberto Mancini recently signing a fresh five-year contract.

It is believed that City have been quick to dismiss the speculation and have insisted that Mancini will remain in charge for the forseeable future, according to ESPN.

Meanwhile, the Spanish boss has also been named as a possible successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
