Kenny Dalglish: 'Sir Alex Ferguson offered support after Hillsborough'

Kenny Dalglish reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson was among the first people to pledge their support to Liverpool following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was among the first people to pledge support to the club after the Hillsborough disaster.

The Scot confirmed that the current Manchester United boss contacted him by telephone in the wake of the 1989 tragedy, which claimed 96 lives.

"When the Hillsborough disaster happened back in 1989, Sir Alex Ferguson was straight on the phone to offer his help in any way he could," Dalglish told The Mirror.

"People out there have different opinions about him. Some love him, some hate him, but when something terrible happens, like Hillsborough, Alex is one of the first asking what he can do.

"So although there is an intense rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool, it would never prevent Alex from offering his assistance, which is exactly what he did back then."

Liverpool take on United at Anfield tomorrow in what will be their first home game since the Hillsborough report cleared Reds fans of any wrongdoing.

Ferguson previously wrote a letter to United supporters, to be handed out at the match, imploring them to show respect on the occasion.
