Jesse Lingard: 'No excuses for derby defeat'

Jesse Lingard admits that Manchester United were 'way off the pace' in Saturday's Manchester derby, which the Red Devils lost 2-1.

Jesse Lingard has admitted that Manchester United were 'way off the pace' in Saturday's Manchester derby.

Lingard was a surprise starter at Old Trafford after missing the opening weeks of the season through injury, and the Englishman was part of a Red Devils team that lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the first derby of the new campaign.

The midfielder, however, has insisted that his side can have no excuses following a disappointing first-half performance and has vowed that the 20-time English champions will respond to the setback.

Lingard was substituted at the interval of the derby as 18-year-old Marcus Rashford, who was tipped to start after netting a hat-trick for England Under-21s last week, entered the frame.
