Manchester United are lining up a shock move for out-of-favour Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen this summer, according to reports.
The Gunners club captain has seen his first-team opportunities limited as Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker became regular fixtures at the back for Arsene Wenger's side.
However, the Daily Express claims that the Red Devils are thought to have earmarked Vermaelen as a possible option to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the heart of their defence.
Van Gaal is keen to reinforce the centre of his backline ahead of next season, with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling the only options in that area.
United may have to wait to recruit Vermaelen with the Belgian currently on international duty at the World Cup.
