Newcastle United keeper Rob Elliot admits that he and his teammates breathed a sigh of relief to secure their first win in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United keeper Rob Elliot has revealed that his side were relieved to secure their first win of the season by defeating Norwich City 6-2 at St James' Park.

Elliot replaced the injured Tim Krul to earn his first start of the season, and although he was beaten twice in the contest, Steve McClaren's side notched their first win of the campaign as Georginio Wijnaldum scored four goals to fire the Magpies to victory.

He told the club's official website: "It's a great result for us and just what we needed. It relieves a lot of stress for the players and the fans after a difficult start to the season.

"I think that sort of result was coming, it was just a case of us having all the pieces just not being able to put them together.

"There's still things to improve on - you don't want to concede two at home - but the response from our players when Norwich had us pegged back was fantastic."

Newcastle rose to 18th in the Premier League as a result of their win.
