Jose Mourinho insists that Michael Essien is able to perform effectively in a number of different positions for Real Madrid despite Spanish media criticism over his selection.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Michael Essien is capable of being used in a number of positions despite media criticism.

Essien started at left back last week as Madrid were defeated by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Mourinho believes that Essien can fulfill a variety of roles at the Bernabeu this season and has defended the Ghanaian after his selection raised eyebrows in the Spanish media.

He told reporters: "Essien plays where I want, and he does not mind.

"He shows the same attitude and mentality as when he decided to come to Real Madrid and play, while making less money than at Chelsea.

"I do not give any credit to what the media say."

Madrid continued their fine recent form in La Liga on Sunday with a rampant 5-0 victory at Real Mallorca.
