Kevin Anderson gets the better of Pablo Cuevas in a five-set encounter at the US Open to advance to the second round.

Kevin Anderson is through to the second round of the US Open after a five-set thriller against Pablo Cuevas.

Anderson took the first set, but was then forced to battle back from 2-1 down before coming through the tie-break convincingly.

The South African edged out his opponent 7-1 in a tie-break in the final set and took the match 6-3 6-7 4-6 6-2 7-6.

Anderson claimed 29 aces throughout the match that lasted four hours and two minutes, and was decisive in the tie-break, coming through with relative ease against the Uruguayan.
