Carlos Gurpegi first-half strike wins it for Athletic Bilbao

Carlos Gurpegi's first-half strike is the difference and seals all three points for Athletic Bilbao against Eibar.

Carlos Gurpegi's first-half strike was enough to seal all three points for Athletic Bilbao against Eibar in their league encounter.

Bilbao started the game brightly and looked the more likely to break the deadlock, as Iker Muniain threatened down the left-hand side.

And Bilbao made the breakthrough on the 36-minute mark when Gurpegi was left free to advance forward and put past a helpless Xabi Irureta in the Eibar net.

The visitors started to have a few more attempts on goal after the restart and came close to doubling their lead several times but were unable to finish their chances.

Eibar offered little in terms of attack but remained resolute in defence for the majority of the game.

The result sees Bilbao move temporarily up to 10th in La Liga.
