Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg while on a skiing holiday.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed that he will miss the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign after breaking his leg while on a skiing holiday.

The 36-year-old represented Germany at the 2022 World Cup, playing every minute of their campaign, which ended in the group stage.

Neuer has also made 16 appearances for Bayern this term, but the stopper will now miss the rest of the season due to the lower leg fracture that he suffered while on a break after the World Cup.

"Hey guys, what can I say, the end of the year could have definitely gone better... While I was trying to get my head clear while ski touring, I suffered a lower leg fracture," he wrote on Instagram.

"Yesterday's surgery went well. Many thanks to the doctors! However, it hurts to know that the current season is over for me."

After learning the news, Germany boss Hansi Flick said: "This is very sad news at the end of the year. We are happy that the surgery went well and wish Manu a good and speedy recovery. That is the most important thing at the moment."

Neuer was expected to pass 500 appearances for Bayern this season, with the stopper currently on 488 outings in all competitions for the Bundesliga giants.

The German missed six games earlier this season through injury, but he returned to play in his team's final three matches before the break for the World Cup.

Neuer will soon enter the final 18 months of his contract at Allianz Arena, and it is unclear whether he will be signing another new deal with the club.

Bayern are currently on a 10-game winning run in all competitions, including a 2-0 success over Schalke 04 in their last match before the campaign was halted.

Julian Nagelsmann's side will play a friendly against Red Bull Salzburg on January 13, with their domestic campaign due to resume on January 20 against FC Cologne.

Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga table, four points ahead of second-placed Freiburg, while they are through to the last-16 stage of the Champions League, with Paris Saint-Germain their opponents.

The club are also expected to be without Lucas Hernandez for the remainder of the season after the defender suffered an ACL injury while representing France in their first match at the World Cup.
