Father: 'Edinson Cavani wanted Napoli stay'

Edinson Cavani's father says that his son wanted to stay at Napoli in order to break Diego Maradano's goalscoring record.

Edinson Cavani's father has said that he expected his son to stay at Napoli in order to break the goalscoring record of Partenopei legend Diego Maradona.

Luis Cavani described the city of Naples as a "second home" to the 26-year-old, who left the Stadio San Paolo for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €63m (£54m).

"His arrival in Paris was sudden, it was almost unexpected," he told TuttoNapoli.

"My son's intentions was to stay in Naples next season because he had one goal – to break Maradona's goalscoring record. The PSG turned up with an incredible offer, and we all know what football is like.

"Naples was Edi's second home, and I don't think he left the fans the way he wanted. I have no doubt, though, that he will soon send a message to the Neapolitans."

Cavani scored 104 goals in 138 appearances for Napoli after joining from Palermo in 2010.
