Newcastle United leave it late to beat Real Sociedad

Newcastle United beat Real Sociedad 1-0 at St James' Park in their final pre-season friendly before the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Newcastle United have rounded off their pre-season fixtures with a slender victory against Real Sociedad courtesy of Moussa Sissoko's late winner.

In a game of limited chances for either side, Mikel Gonzalez played in Imanol Agirretxe just short of the half-hour mark, with the striker failing to lift the ball over Tim Krul when in a good position.

Gonzalez was involved again before the interval, sweeping a fine diagonal pass out to Sergio Canales, whose looping volley ended up in the hands of Krul.

Newcastle were unable to create any real openings, although Geronimo Rulli had to produce a great save to keep out Mike Williamson's headed effort from a corner on the hour.

It looked as though the game was going to finish goalless, but Sissoko fired home with a side-footed finish to win the contest for the Magpies with two minutes remaining.

Newcastle kick off their Premier League campaign with a home match against Manchester City next weekend.
