Victor Wanyama plays down Europa League schedule

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama believes that the Saints' squad is good enough to juggle Europa League and Premier League schedules.

Victor Wanyama has claimed that Southampton can cope with the physical demands of juggling the Europa League with their domestic commitments this season.

Ronald Koeman's side look on course to reach the group stages of Europe's secondary competition after being paired with Danish side Midtjylland in the playoffs.

The hectic schedule appeared to catch up with Everton last season as the Toffees finished in 11th place in the Premier League.

"We know it's not easy," Wanyama told the Daily Echo. "But we showed in the second half [against Newcastle] what we can do, so I think we can cope with it - playing Thursday and Sunday.

"We just need the same spirit that we showed in the second half. If we keep on doing that then I think we can cope with two games in one week.

"I think it's psychological and also physical, because it demands a lot of energy. In between, you need rest, so if you get your rest then just think about the next game. I think that's the thing - just think about the next game because it's always a few days to the next one. Then you need to concentrate more and show focus."

The Saints began their top-flight season with a 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United on Sunday, a matter of days after beating Vitesse 2-0.
