Diafra Sakho charged forward early on as the visitors sought an early goal, but Chris Solly halted the striker's progress with a well-timed tackle on the edge of the box.
Charlton started to see more of the ball as the opening 45 minutes progressed, with Tony Watt and Regan Charles-Cook linking up out wide before Morgan Fox forced a corner, only to head wide from the resulting set piece.
Charles-Cook came close before the break when he lobbed the ball over Darren Randolph in the West Ham goal, only to see his finish go just wide.
The 18-year-old wanted a penalty shortly before the break when he took a tumble under a challenge from Angelo Ogbonna, but referee Kevin Friend was not interested in awarding the spot kick to the hosts.
Sakho brushed the side-netting just moments after the restart after creating some space inside the Charlton box, narrowly missing the target.
The West Ham striker continued to look the most likely to break the deadlock as he fired a rasping effort from 25 yards out, only to be denied by a diving save from Tom Pope.
Randolph was called into action again though as Charlton started to look sharper in the final 20 minutes, with former West Ham midfielder Alou Diarra forcing a double save, before a shot from youngster Karlan Ahearne-Grant in the final 10 minutes was also parried clear.
