AC Milan have confirmed that Mathieu Flamini has left the club following a breakdown in contract negotiations.
The midfielder, whose current terms expire this summer, was expected to sign a new two-year deal with the Rossoneri.
However, he has now been told that he can leave the former Serie A champions for free.
"The deadline has passed and we told his lawyer we won't be waiting any more. We'll bring in a new midfielder by August 31," Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani told Sky Sport Italia.
"It could be Alberto Aquilani or someone else, as he is a Liverpool player and we're not in talks with them."
Flamini moved to the San Siro on a free transfer from Arsenal in 2008.
