Jose Mourinho urges Chelsea fans to stop taunting Liverpool's Steven Gerrard

Jose Mourinho urges Chelsea fans to stop taunting Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and show him the respect he "deserves".

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has urged supporters to stop taunting Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and show him some "respect".

The Blues following have poked fun at the midfielder numerous times this season by singing a chant mocking the 34-year-old's slip against Chelsea last season, which hampered the Reds' Premier League title hopes.

On Tuesday, Gerrard is expected to play against Chelsea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final at Anfield, and Mourinho believes that the ex-England skipper deserves respect from the opposing fans.

"Gerrard is an historical player for Liverpool, an historical player for the Premier League," The Express quotes Mourinho as saying. "He is an opponent that I always admired and respect.

"There is a song that my fans have about him that I don't like at all. A couple of times it's good fun, but to go and go and go, especially when a player like him deserves respect - we don't need that.

"We have so many other songs that we don't need that one, and I love these quotes when he was saying that in this life he would never score against Liverpool. I love these words."

Gerrard will leave Liverpool at the end of the season following a 25-year career at Anfield and will join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.
