Newcastle United reportedly failed with an approach for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during the January transfer window.
The Magpies, who are bidding to remain out of a relegation battle, signed five new players at the turn of the year, the financial outlay allegedly reaching £93m.
However, according to The Times, Newcastle were also interested in securing a deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has sometimes struggled for game time at Anfield.
While the England international has made a total of 29 appearances in all competitions this season, just nine starts have come in the Premier League.
Nevertheless, the report claims that the 28-year-old did not see the value in moving to St James' Park at the midway point of the campaign.
With the versatile midfielder having just 15 months remaining on his contract, the situation could potentially change ahead of 2022-23.
